Convert PNG to PSD, then build layers on top

Updated on

To convert a PNG to PSD, drop the image below. It opens in the PhotopixPro editor in your browser, and File > Save downloads it as a PSD, transparency included. The image becomes one layer, because splitting a flat picture into separate objects would take AI. You can add text, adjustment or color layers before you save. Nothing is uploaded.

Convert an image to PSD

Drop the image here, or use the button below. Your PNG, JPG or WebP opens in the editor as a layer, ready to save as a PSD.

PNG, JPG, WebP, TIFF; Krita, Paint.NET and Affinity files too. Never uploaded.

How to convert PNG to PSD

  1. Open the image

Drop it on the box or use the button. A PNG opens as one layer, with its transparency. The first time, your browser downloads the editor, about 11 MB.

  2. Add layers if you need them

Add text with the Horizontal Type Tool (T), or a Curves, Levels or Solid Color layer from the Layer menu.

  3. Save as PSD

Choose File > Save. The PSD downloads straight away, named after your image.

What you get: one layer, ready to build on

A PNG or JPG is a single flat picture, so the PSD starts with one layer that holds it. A PNG with transparency opens as a layer called Layer 0, and its transparent areas stay transparent in the PSD. In our test, a PNG logo with a semi-transparent rectangle saved as a 64 KB PSD and, opened again, matched the PNG pixel for pixel. A JPG has no transparency, so it opens as a solid Background layer.

What makes the PSD worth having is what you put on top:

  • Text with the Horizontal Type Tool (T), which stays editable in the PSD.
  • Adjustment layers such as Curves or Levels, from Layer > New Adjustment Layer. They change the look without touching the pixels underneath; our Curves and Levels guide shows how.
  • A color background with Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color… It starts with the foreground color; double-click its thumbnail to pick another.
  • New layers to paint on, with the Create a new layer button at the bottom of the Layers panel, or a copy of the image with Layer > New > Layer via Copy (Ctrl+J).

"PNG to PSD with layers": what isn't possible

A lot of people look for a PNG to PSD converter "with layers". A flat image has no layers inside it: the text, the person and the background are all the same pixels. Splitting them takes an AI tool that guesses where each object ends, and PhotopixPro has no AI. If you need the separate layers, ask whoever made the image for the original layered file.

Krita, Paint.NET and Affinity files to PSD

The editor also opens documents from three other apps with their layers, and File > Save downloads any open document as a PSD. This is what we saw when we opened sample files on October 17, 2026:

FileFromOpens withLeft out
.kraKritaLayers, nested groups and blend modesFilter layers
.pdnPaint.NETLayers and Paint.NET blend modesDocument metadata
.af, .afdesignAffinityLayers, groups, shapes and textLayer effects such as shadows, glows and bevels, and bitmap fills, which are dropped or approximated

The editor lists what it couldn't bring in when the file opens. We've tested opening these files, not yet saving each of them as PSD, and we haven't tried Affinity Photo (.afphoto) files. Paint.NET itself opens and saves PSD files through a free plugin that you install separately; the plugin's site says only 8-bit RGB images, raster layers and the common blend modes come through without loss. For a PNG instead of a PSD, use File > Export > Export As…

Frequently asked questions

Can you convert a PNG to a PSD?

Yes. Open the PNG in an editor that saves PSD files and save it: in PhotopixPro, drop it on this page and choose File > Save. You get a real PSD with the image on one layer, and transparency is kept. It won't have separate layers for each object, because a PNG doesn't contain them.

How do I convert a JPG to PSD?

The same way as a PNG. Drop the JPG on this page, and when it opens in the editor, choose File > Save to download a PSD. A JPG has no transparency, so the PSD starts as one solid Background layer. Add text, adjustments or more layers before saving if you need them, and save again whenever you change something.

Can I convert a PNG to PSD with layers?

Not automatically. A PNG stores one flat picture, so there are no layers to recover. Splitting it into objects takes an AI tool that guesses where each one ends, and PhotopixPro has no AI. What it does is keep your image as a clean base layer and let you add new layers on top: text, adjustments, color fills or painting.

Does the PSD keep the transparent background?

Yes. Transparent and semi-transparent areas of the PNG stay that way in the PSD. If you'd rather have a solid background, choose Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color… and drag the new layer below your image in the Layers panel. It starts with the foreground color; double-click its thumbnail to change it.

Is my image uploaded when I convert it?

No. Your browser reads the image from your disk, the editor makes the PSD inside the tab, and the file downloads straight to your computer. Our server only sends the editor's own files, and the editor has no telemetry or error reporting that could send your image anywhere.

How do I convert a Krita or Paint.NET file to PSD?

Drop the .kra or .pdn file on this page. It opens in the editor with its layers, groups and blend modes, and the editor tells you if anything couldn't come across, such as Krita filter layers. Then choose File > Save to download a PSD. We've tested opening these files, not yet saving each one as a PSD, so check the result.

Turn your image into a PSD

Open the editor, drop the image in and save. Your file stays on your computer.
