Edit PNG and JPG images online, for free

Updated on

To edit a PNG or JPG online, drop the image below. It opens in the PhotopixPro editor in your browser, where you can crop it, resize it, fix colors with Curves or Levels, remove small spots and add text on its own layer. Then export a PNG, JPG or WebP. It's free, with no sign-up, and nothing is uploaded.

Edit a PNG or JPG

Drop the image here, or use the button below. Your image opens in the editor, ready to crop, retouch, add text and export.

JPG, PNG, WebP, TIFF or BMP. Read by your browser, never uploaded.

How to edit a PNG or JPG online

  1. Open the image

Drop it on the box or use the button. The first time, your browser downloads the editor, about 11 MB.

  2. Make your changes

Crop with the Crop Tool (C), resize with Image > Image Size…, adjust colors with Image > Adjustments, or add text with the Horizontal Type Tool (T).

  3. Export it

File > Export > Export As… gives you a PNG, JPG or WebP, with a preview and the estimated file size.

What you can do to a PNG or JPG

The everyday edits are all there, under the same names as in Photoshop:

  • Crop and resize: the Crop Tool (C) and Image > Image Size… for the whole image, and Edit > Free Transform for a selection or a layer you've added.
  • Colors and tone: Image > Adjustments > Levels… (Ctrl+L) and Curves… (Ctrl+M), or the same adjustments as layers you can change later, under Layer > New Adjustment Layer. Our guide to Curves and Levels shows how.
  • Retouching: the Spot Healing Brush Tool for small spots, the Clone Stamp Tool and Edit > Content-Aware Fill…, all without AI.
  • Selections: Select > Subject, Select > Sky and the Magic Wand Tool, also without AI.
  • Text: the Horizontal Type Tool (T) adds text on its own layer, in Inter or JetBrains Mono.
  • Layers: add layers, change their opacity or blend mode, group and merge them, as our beginner's guide to layers explains.

A PNG editor that keeps the transparent background

A PNG with transparency opens with its transparent areas intact. Export it again with File > Export > Quick Export as PNG or with Export As…, and the transparency stays. If you've added layers, such as a logo or some text, you can export just one: select it and choose Layer > Quick Export as PNG, and you get that layer alone, trimmed to its content. Saved as a PSD, the transparency is kept too.

JPG: quality and file size

Export As… sets the JPG quality with a slider, starting at 85, and shows the estimated file size before you download, so you can trade detail for a smaller file. You can scale the image down in the same window. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas come out white. For graphics with text or sharp edges, a PNG usually looks cleaner; for photos, a JPG is usually much smaller.

Can I edit the text that's already in the picture?

Not really. A PNG or JPG is one flat picture, so its text is just pixels. To change it, select the old words and fill them with Edit > Content-Aware Fill…, or paint over them with the Clone Stamp Tool, then add new text with the Horizontal Type Tool (T), which creates a text layer you can edit. On the web the editor has two fonts, Inter and JetBrains Mono, so the new text may not match the original.

WebP, TIFF and other images

The editor also opens WebP, TIFF, BMP, GIF (only the first frame) and SVG (as shapes, without its text). It exports WebP, lossless by default or lossy with a quality slider, and TIFF. Other files have their own pages: HEIC to JPG for HEIC photos, Open RAW online for CR2, NEF, ARW and DNG files, and Edit PSD online for layered PSD files. It doesn't open AVIF, JPEG XL or PDF files.

Save as PSD or export?

  • File > Export > Export As… gives you a PNG, JPG, WebP or TIFF, with a preview and the estimated file size. That's the one for a finished image, and nothing is stamped on it.
  • File > Save (Ctrl+S) always downloads a PSD, even if you opened a JPG or PNG. Use it to keep your layers and text editable for later; our PNG to PSD page explains what you get.

Frequently asked questions

Is this PNG and JPG editor free?

Yes, it's free, with no account, no ads and no watermark on what you export, and you can use it for personal or commercial work. There's no paid version. PhotopixPro is a product of PhotoPix Solutions, and our about page explains how it works and what it doesn't do.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Your browser reads the image from your disk, and the editor works on it inside the tab. Our server only sends the editor's own files, and the editor has no telemetry or error reporting that could send your image anywhere. When you export, the file downloads straight to your computer. You can check it in your browser's developer tools.

Can I remove the background from a PNG or JPG?

Sometimes, without AI. A JPG, or a PNG without transparency, opens as a locked Background layer, so choose Layer > New > Layer from Background… Then use Remove Background in the Properties panel, under Quick Actions. It works best on a clean, simple background and less well when the subject blends in. Export a PNG to keep the transparency; a JPG fills it with white.

Does editing a JPG lose quality?

A little, each time you export one. JPG compression discards some detail, so start from the original and export once at the end. The quality starts at 85, and you can move the slider up to keep more detail in exchange for a bigger file. If you'll come back to the image, save a PSD with File > Save too, so your layers and text stay editable.

Can I edit several images at once?

One at a time. Batch processing is turned off in the web version, so open an image, edit it, export it, then open the next. You can have several images open as tabs in the editor, and copy and paste between them. An image copied from another app or a web page can't be pasted in, though: open it with File > Open… instead.

Can I edit a PNG or JPG on my phone?

Not comfortably. The editor is built for a computer with a keyboard and a mouse or pen, and it has no phone layout. If you open it on a phone, it doesn't download until you ask, and it offers to share the link so you can open it later on your computer.

Edit your image

Open the editor, drop a PNG or JPG in and export when you're done. Nothing is uploaded.
